5 Home Upgrades You Can Make This Weekend

1. Clean out your closets

It may not seem as glamorous as revamping your kitchen or redoing your bathroom, but it can be just as important when it comes time to sell your home. After all, people love houses that are chock full of storage space. As a result, potential buyers will want to see how much of their stuff will actually fit in your home, if they decide to buy it.

However, if your closets are filled to the brim, people won’t get an accurate idea of just how much storage space you’ve got. Your closets will look like they’re bursting at the seams, and no one wants to buy a home that can’t accommodate them (and their stuff!).

Chances are your closets are long-overdue for a good cleaning and organizing session anyways, so you might as well bite the bullet and do it now.

If your closets are jammed with stuff that you absolutely-positively-can’t-live-without, rent a small storage unit and put the stuff in there. That way, you won’t have to throw away your priceless treasures — and you won’t have to worry about them leaving a bad taste in potential buyers’ mouths.

2. Install laminate flooring

This may seem incredibly difficult, but if you can put together a puzzle, you can do it! That’s because some laminate flooring is designed to “float” — meaning that you don’t have to nail or glue it down to your subfloor. Instead, it comes in planks that you simply snap together. All you have to do is line the pieces up, and snap the edges together until the entire floor is covered.

Yes, you’ll have to cut a couple of planks when you get towards the edges of the room. However, that’s not hard to do — and it certainly doesn’t merit paying a professional!

Best of all, nothing has to dry or set. Once everything is snapped together, you can bring the furniture back in.

3. Paint

Want to give that old room a new look? No problem! Just grab some rollers and some painter’s tape, and get moving! Yes, you’ll have to move all the furniture out of the room and remove everything from the walls (including the outlet and light switch covers). However, if you can cover up those bright pink or yellow walls with a more muted beige or gray, you’ll really thank yourself when you see how great everything looks on Monday!

4. Change your hardware

If you’re less than thrilled with the cabinet handles and drawer pulls in your kitchen and bathroom, you’ll be happy to hear that they’re easy to replace. Changing them out simply involves a handy screwdriver and a few hours of your time. In the end, you could end up making the entire room look more modern!

5. Upgrade your landscaping

If your plants look like they’re on their last legs, head to your local nursery or home improvement store and see what catches your eye. Just be sure to look for plants that can handle whatever Mother Nature throws at your house year-round. Otherwise, you’ll be spending another weekend in a few months replacing your landscaping all over again!
